The rope length is adjustable, but  the only way to adjust it is to pull the"rope" through the handles to the needed length, and then cut it. It's fairly easy to do, but it's a permanent adjustment. If you need to adjust more than a few inches you'll definitely need to cut it, otherwise you'll have excess rope hanging out the ends of the handles. But yes, the handles will slide to any length along the rope, where they easily attach.
